Overview

Prosthechea karwinskii extract is derived from the leaves (and sometimes pseudobulbs or flowers) of Prosthechea karwinskii, an orchid endemic to Mexico and traditionally used in folk medicine for treating diabetes, obesity, inflammation-related conditions, wounds, burns, coughs, and to assist in labor[1][3][4]. The primary bioactive compounds identified in the leaf extracts include quinic acid, neochlorogenic acid, chlorogenic acid, rutin, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside (nicotiflorin), embelin and other phenolic compounds with antioxidant properties[5][6]. Preclinical studies demonstrate that administration of P. karwinskii leaf extracts reduces glucose levels and insulin resistance indices (HOMA-IR and TyG), lowers triglycerides and cholesterol levels in obese rats with metabolic syndrome induced by a high-sucrose diet—effects comparable to metformin[3][6][7]. The mechanism of action is attributed mainly to its antioxidant activity (scavenging reactive oxygen species via phenols/flavonoids), anti-inflammatory effects (reducing TNF-α and HS-CRP), modulation of adiponectin levels (improving insulin sensitivity), as well as possible anticoagulant activity[1][2][5][6]. These findings support its potential use as a nutraceutical ingredient or dietary supplement for managing metabolic syndrome-related diseases.
