Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prostowin is a proprietary Ayurvedic medicine developed by Bal Pharma (specifically its Bal Vedics division) for the management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The formulation is a polyherbal blend of ten ingredients, including extracts from *Mimosa pudica*, *Tribulus terrestris*, and *Areca catechu*. Its therapeutic effect is attributed to a dual mechanism: the inhibition of 5-alpha reductase (primarily via beta-sitosterol and *Areca catechu*), which prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and alpha-adrenergic blockade (via *Areca catechu*). These actions help reduce prostate volume and alleviate lower urinary tract symptoms such as frequency, urgency, and painful urination.
