Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Protegera toothpaste (NaF) is a novel fluoride dentifrice developed by Protegera, Inc. for the prevention and reduction of dental plaque. The formulation's active ingredient is sodium fluoride (NaF), but its key distinguishing feature is a micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) network derived from Norway spruce tree wood pulp, combined with microcrystalline cellulose and silica particles. This MFC fiber matrix is designed to mechanically dislodge and drag away dental plaque biofilm from tooth surfaces, including interproximal spaces and areas beyond the reach of toothbrush bristles, without relying on direct antimicrobial actions or causing high dentin abrasivity (RDA = 5). In a randomized, early Phase 1 clinical trial (NCT06082869), Protegera toothpaste demonstrated superior plaque reduction compared to Crest Cavity Protection toothpaste over 7 days of twice-daily brushing.
