Overview

Protein C concentrate is a plasma-derived anticoagulant used as replacement therapy in patients with severe congenital or acquired protein C deficiency. It is indicated for the prevention and treatment of venous thrombosis and purpura fulminans, particularly in neonates, children, and adults with severe congenital deficiency[2][4][5][8]. Protein C is a vitamin K-dependent serine protease precursor (zymogen) synthesized in the liver. Upon activation by the thrombin-thrombomodulin complex on endothelial cells, it becomes activated protein C (APC), which exerts potent anticoagulant effects by inactivating coagulation factors Va and VIIIa—thereby reducing thrombin formation and clot development[4][8]. Ceprotin was the first FDA-approved therapy for this indication and has orphan drug status[5]. The primary developer was Baxter Healthcare Corporation; Takeda is also listed as a key manufacturer[5][6].
