Overview

ProtheraCytes is an autologous cell therapy product consisting of freshly prepared CD34+ stem cells derived from the peripheral blood of patients after mobilization from the bone marrow. The therapy is designed for regeneration and repair of damaged tissues, particularly cardiac tissue following acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The CD34+ cells are expanded, purified, and formulated into a fresh cell suspension for injection. Mechanistically, ProtheraCytes promote revascularization, regulate inflammation and apoptosis, secrete vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), release exosomes containing proangiogenic and antiapoptotic microRNAs, and support cardiomyocyte regeneration. Clinical studies have shown promising results in improving left ventricular function post-AMI. Developed by CellProthera, the therapy is currently in Phase II clinical development for myocardial infarction and has also been investigated preclinically for ischemic stroke.
