Overview
Prothipendyl is a neuroleptic agent of the azaphenothiazine class, structurally related to phenothiazines but with a nitrogen atom replacing one carbon in the tricyclic ring. It is primarily used in Europe for the treatment of restlessness, agitation, and anxiety associated with psychiatric conditions such as psychotic syndromes. Unlike typical antipsychotics, prothipendyl has weak dopamine receptor antagonism and is not considered to have significant antipsychotic effects. Its pharmacological profile includes strong antihistamine (H1 receptor antagonist), anxiolytic, antiemetic, sedative, and hypnotic actions[1][4][5]. It has been studied for use in dementia, depression, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, psychosomatic disorders[1][2][9].
