Overview

Protodioscin is a naturally occurring furostanol saponin found in several plant species, most notably *Tribulus terrestris*, *Dioscorea* (yam), and *Trigonella*. It is widely recognized as a dietary supplement ingredient rather than a regulated pharmaceutical drug. Research has explored its potential in various therapeutic areas, including oncology (where it was screened by the National Cancer Institute as NSC-698796), hyperlipidemia, and sexual dysfunction. Its biological effects are attributed to the stimulation of nitric oxide release, activation of Na+/K+ ATPase and Ca2+/Mg2+ ATPase, and potential modulation of androgen levels. While it has shown activity against several human cancer cell lines, including leukemia, colon, and prostate cancer in research settings, it remains primarily in the realm of nutraceuticals and research without a formal pharmaceutical developer.
