Overview

Protopine is a natural isoquinoline alkaloid found in various plants, including opium poppy, Corydalis, and Fumaria officinalis. It exhibits a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidative, neuroprotective, anti-parasitic, anti-helminthic, anti-platelet aggregation, vasodilatory, anticholinesterase, anti-addictive, and anticonvulsant effects. Its mechanisms of action are diverse, involving modulation of opioid, alpha-adrenergic, and calcium signaling pathways, inhibition of inflammatory mediators like NO, COX-2, and PGE2, microtubule stabilization, and antagonism of histamine H1 receptors. Protopine is currently being investigated for its therapeutic potential across numerous disease areas.
