Overview

PROTOXIN is a botulinum toxin type A product developed by the South Korean biotechnology company Protox. It is a neuromuscular blocking agent designed for aesthetic and therapeutic applications, primarily the treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines (frown lines). Like other botulinum toxin type A products, PROTOXIN functions as a zinc-dependent metalloprotease that enters presynaptic nerve terminals and cleaves the synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25). This cleavage prevents the calcium-triggered release of acetylcholine into the neuromuscular junction, resulting in temporary muscle paralysis and the smoothing of overlying skin wrinkles. PROTOXIN has been evaluated in Phase I/II clinical trials to demonstrate its safety and efficacy compared to established active comparators like Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA).
