Overview

Proxiphylline + salbutamol is a fixed-dose combination drug containing two active ingredients used primarily for the management of respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Proxiphylline is a xanthine derivative related to theophylline, acting as a bronchodilator by inhibiting phosphodiesterase, leading to increased intracellular cyclic AMP and subsequent relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. Salbutamol (also known as albuterol) is a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that induces bronchodilation by stimulating beta-2 receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, resulting in airway relaxation and improved airflow. The combination leverages complementary mechanisms—proxiphylline’s inhibition of phosphodiesterase and salbutamol’s direct beta-2 stimulation—to provide additive or synergistic bronchodilatory effects. This dual action can improve symptom control in patients with obstructive airway diseases who do not achieve adequate relief with monotherapy.
