Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Aurocaine is a topical ophthalmic anesthetic containing proxymetacaine hydrochloride (also known as proparacaine hydrochloride) at a concentration of 0.5%. Developed by Aurolab and distributed in the Philippines by Brady Pharma, it is indicated for inducing rapid, short-acting corneal anesthesia during minor ophthalmic procedures, such as tonometry, gonioscopy, foreign body removal, and preoperative preparation. Mechanistically, proxymetacaine acts as a local anesthetic by reversibly blocking voltage-gated sodium channels on neuronal cell membranes. This inhibition prevents the influx of sodium ions required for the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses, thereby temporarily numbing the ocular surface and preventing the transmission of pain signals to the brain.
