Overview

Proxyphylline is a methylxanthine derivative and a xanthine-type bronchodilator primarily used for the treatment of obstructive airway diseases such as asthma and chronic bronchitis. It acts by relaxing smooth muscles in the bronchial airways and has additional cardiotonic (cardiac stimulant) and vasodilatory properties[1][4][5][6]. The mechanism of action involves inhibition of phosphodiesterase enzymes (PDE), leading to increased intracellular levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP) or cyclic GMP (cGMP), which results in bronchodilation[1][5]. Proxyphylline may also interact with adenosine receptors. It is typically administered orally as tablets. Common side effects include nausea, headache, muscle tremor, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, and restlessness[6][7]. Proxyphylline is classified under ATC code R03DA03 for drugs used in obstructive airway diseases.
