Overview

Prozin is a topical antimicrobial cream containing 1.0% w/w silver sulfadiazine, developed and marketed by Regal Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of burns and wound infections. As a generic formulation of silver sulfadiazine, it functions through a dual mechanism: the release of silver ions provides broad-spectrum bactericidal and fungicidal activity by disrupting microbial cell walls and binding to DNA, while the sulfadiazine moiety acts as a competitive inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthase, an enzyme essential for bacterial folic acid synthesis. This combination of effects makes it highly effective in preventing and treating infections in second- and third-degree burns. The product is supplied as a white opaque cream in 15-gram tubes and is widely used in the East and Central African markets.
