The PRP vaccine refers to the Polyribosylribitol Phosphate (PRP) polysaccharide, which is a key capsular component of the *Haemophilus influenzae type b* (Hib) bacterium. This polysaccharide acts as an antigen, stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against Hib. While early versions were plain polysaccharide vaccines, conjugate vaccines, where PRP is covalently linked to a carrier protein (such as tetanus toxoid or meningococcal outer membrane protein), were developed to enhance immunogenicity, particularly in infants. These vaccines are crucial for preventing invasive Hib diseases like meningitis, epiglottitis, and pneumonia. GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has been involved in clinical trials assessing the immune memory and immunogenicity of vaccines containing this PRP component.
