PRRSFREE is a recombinant chimeric subunit vaccine developed for the prevention of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) in pigs. The vaccine is based on a plasmid containing a detoxified Pseudomonas exotoxin fused with open reading frames (ORFs) 7, 1b, and chimeric subunits from ORFs 5 and 6 of both type 1 and type 2 PRRSV strains. It is administered intramuscularly to piglets at specific ages as per manufacturer recommendations. In studies, PRRSFREE demonstrated efficacy by reducing clinical signs such as fever, respiratory distress, lung lesions, viremia levels, and increasing interferon-γ secreting cells following challenge with heterologous types of PRRSV[1][2]. The vaccine provides cross-protection against both major genotypes of the virus.
