PRS-080 is a recombinant protein drug classified as an Anticalin, specifically engineered to antagonize hepcidin, the master regulator of systemic iron homeostasis. By binding and sequestering hepcidin with high affinity and selectivity, PRS-080 inhibits its activity, thereby mobilizing iron trapped in storage cells and increasing serum iron levels. This mechanism directly addresses functional iron deficiency seen in anemia of chronic disease (ACD) and anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly in patients undergoing hemodialysis. The drug was initially developed by Pieris Pharmaceuticals and later by Palvella Therapeutics following a merger. Clinical studies demonstrated that intravenous administration of PRS-080 leads to rapid suppression of plasma hepcidin, followed by dose-dependent increases in serum iron concentration and transferrin saturation[1][3][4][6][7].
