Overview

Prune fiber is a dietary fiber component derived from dried plums (*Prunus domestica*). It consists of a complex mixture of soluble and insoluble fibers, including pectin, cellulose, and hemicellulose. Research, often supported by the California Prune Board, has demonstrated that prune fiber can lower plasma and liver lipids, such as cholesterol and triglycerides, in animal models and human subjects with mild hypercholesterolemia. Its primary mechanism involves the sequestration of bile acids in the gastrointestinal tract, which promotes their fecal excretion and subsequently stimulates the liver to utilize systemic cholesterol for the synthesis of new bile acids. It is utilized as a functional food ingredient and dietary supplement for cardiovascular health and digestive regularity.
