Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prunelax (also marketed as Ciruelax) is an over-the-counter natural stimulant laxative used for the relief of occasional constipation. Its primary active ingredient is senna leaf extract, which contains sennosides. These sennosides are prodrugs that pass through the upper gastrointestinal tract and are hydrolyzed by colonic bacteria into active rheinanthrones. These active metabolites stimulate the myenteric plexus, increasing peristaltic contractions and altering water and electrolyte transport across the intestinal wall to promote bowel movements. The product also contains dried prune extract and is available in various strengths, including Regular and Maximum Relief tablets, typically providing relief within 8 to 12 hours. It is marketed as a vegan, gluten-free herbal product.
