Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Prunella vulgaris extract is a botanical extract derived from the perennial herb *Prunella vulgaris*, commonly known as self-heal or heal-all. It is widely used in traditional medicine for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Research in diabetic models suggests that the extract, particularly aqueous formulations (APV), can suppress hyperglycemia and inhibit the development of diabetic atherosclerosis. Its therapeutic effects are mediated through the improvement of vascular endothelial function, characterized by the upregulation of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and the downregulation of inflammatory markers and adhesion molecules such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and TGF-β1. Additionally, it has demonstrated the ability to improve lipid profiles by lowering LDL and triglycerides while raising HDL, and it protects against diabetic nephropathy by restoring renal function markers like creatinine clearance.
