Overview

Prusogliptin is an orally active, highly selective dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor developed for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Originally discovered by the Development Center for Biotechnology (DCB) in Taiwan and subsequently licensed to CSPC Ouyi Pharmaceutical, the drug functions by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which is responsible for the rapid degradation of incretin hormones such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). By prolonging the activity of these hormones, prusogliptin enhances glucose-dependent insulin secretion and suppresses glucagon release, thereby improving glycemic control. In May 2024, the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) of China approved prusogliptin for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, marking its first global regulatory approval.
