Prussian blue is a deep-blue pigment and pharmaceutical agent used as an oral antidote for poisoning by radioactive cesium and thallium (including non-radioactive thallium)[1][3][4][5]. Its mechanism of action involves trapping monovalent cations such as cesium and thallium in its crystal lattice via ion-exchange with potassium or ammonium ions. This prevents their absorption from the intestines and promotes their excretion through feces[1][2][3][5]. Prussian blue is included on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[3][5]. It is administered orally (capsule or mixed with food/liquid) under medical supervision. The drug reduces the biological half-life of cesium and thallium in the body by increasing fecal elimination[2][5]. Side effects are generally mild but may include constipation, stomach discomfort, low blood potassium levels, and discoloration of stool or sweat[1][4].
