Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) are a versatile class of nanomaterials based on the FDA-approved iron hexacyanoferrate framework. They are characterized by their intrinsic multi-enzyme-mimicking (nanozyme) activities, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POD) activities, which enable them to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and modulate oxidative stress. PBNPs also exhibit strong absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region, making them effective agents for photothermal therapy (PTT) and photoacoustic imaging. Beyond their catalytic and photothermal properties, PBNPs have been engineered for targeted drug delivery, chemokine sequestration (e.g., CCL2), and as components in diagnostic biosensors. They are being investigated for a wide range of indications, including cancer (osteosarcoma, breast cancer), cardiovascular diseases (myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury, chronic heart failure), atherosclerosis, and diabetic wound healing.
