Overview
Pruvanserin is a selective serotonin 5-HT2A receptor antagonist that was developed for the treatment of insomnia. It was originally discovered by Merck KGaA and later developed by Eli Lilly and Company. Pruvanserin reached phase II clinical trials for primary insomnia but development appears to have been discontinued, as it is no longer in active pipelines. In addition to its sleep-improving properties, preclinical studies suggested potential antidepressant, anxiolytic, and working memory-enhancing effects[1][3][5]. The drug is administered orally and acts primarily by blocking the 5-HT2A receptor.
