PRX-115 is a recombinant PEGylated uricase (urate oxidase) enzyme developed by Protalix BioTherapeutics for the treatment of uncontrolled or severe gout. Uricase is an enzyme not naturally present in humans that converts uric acid to allantoin, a more soluble compound easily eliminated through urine. PRX-115 is expressed using the proprietary ProCellEx plant cell-based expression system and chemically modified with polyethylene glycol (PEGylation) to increase its half-life and reduce immunogenicity. Preclinical studies demonstrated long half-life, reduced immunogenic risk, and high specific activity. In phase I clinical trials, PRX-115 showed dose-dependent reductions in plasma urate levels and was generally well-tolerated with mostly mild-to-moderate adverse events. The drug is administered intravenously[1][2][5][7].
