Overview

PRX00933 is an orally administered small‑molecule agonist of the serotonin 5‑HT2C receptor, originally developed as a targeted approach to activate hypothalamic satiety pathways for weight control and later explored for hypertension and ophthalmic indications including glaucoma.[1][3][5][8][9] As a selective 5‑HT2C receptor agonist (also known as BVT‑933 or GW‑876167), it produced dose‑dependent, statistically significant weight loss in randomized, placebo‑controlled Phase II obesity trials and was generally safe and well tolerated in more than 480 subjects, while also demonstrating rapid reductions in blood pressure supportive of use in acute hypertension.[1][2][4][5][8] Preclinical and early development work further suggested potential utility in glaucoma through intraocular pressure lowering, as well as broader applications in diabetes, epilepsy, urinary incontinence, and psychiatric and other ophthalmology disorders, with development led successively by Cambridge Biotechnology, Swedish Orphan Biovitrum, Proximagen, Altacor (for glaucoma), and later Upsher‑Smith via acquisition of Proximagen.[2][3][5][7][8][12][13]
