Pseudechis porphyriacus venom is a complex biological mixture of bioactive proteins and peptides derived from the Red-bellied Blacksnake, an Australian elapid. It is currently being investigated for its potent cytotoxic and anti-proliferative properties against various malignancies, specifically human breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7) and malignant melanoma (A-375). The venom's pharmacological activity is primarily driven by its diverse isoforms of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) and three-finger toxins (3FTx). Research indicates that specific fractions of the venom, such as the basic PLA2 found in Peak 13 and the acidic PLA2 and 3FTx isoforms in Peak 1, induce significant cytotoxicity and morphological changes in cancer cells. While the crude venom is known for its myotoxic and anticoagulant effects in the context of snakebite, isolated components are being explored as lead compounds for the development of novel antineoplastic therapeutics.
