Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine and decongestant used to relieve nasal and sinus congestion caused by colds, allergies, hay fever, or sinusitis. It works primarily as an agonist at alpha adrenergic receptors (and to a lesser extent beta adrenergic receptors), causing vasoconstriction in the nasal mucosa which reduces swelling and congestion. Pseudoephedrine also acts as a norepinephrine releasing agent, indirectly stimulating adrenergic receptors throughout the body. It is taken orally and is available both alone and in combination with other medications for symptomatic relief of upper respiratory tract conditions[1][2][3][4][5].
