pshRNA-survivin is a gene silencing therapeutic utilizing **plasmid-mediated short hairpin RNA (shRNA) designed to target and downregulate the mRNA** of the human gene survivin (also known as BIRC5). Survivin is a member of the inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAP) family and is highly expressed in many cancers but not in most normal adult tissues. Its inhibition leads to increased tumor cell apoptosis (via activation of caspase-9 and disruption of cell cycle progression) and reduced cell proliferation.
