Psilacetin is a synthetic psychedelic compound formally known as 4-Acetoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (4-AcO-DMT). It is structurally similar to psilocybin—the primary psychoactive component in magic mushrooms—and acts as a prodrug to psilocin. Upon ingestion, it is metabolized into psilocin in the body, which then exerts hallucinogenic and introspective effects by acting primarily on serotonin receptors. Psilacetin has been investigated for its potential therapeutic applications in mental health disorders such as depression (including treatment-resistant depression), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, and addiction. Its mechanism of action involves promoting neuroplasticity and altering thought patterns through serotonergic activity. The compound was first synthesized by Dr. David E. Nichols and has been suggested as an economical alternative to synthetic psilocybin for research purposes due to its easier synthesis and similar pharmacological profile[1][2][3][10].
