Psilocin is a naturally occurring substituted tryptamine alkaloid and the primary active metabolite of psilocybin, found in various species of psychedelic mushrooms. It acts as a serotonergic psychedelic and is responsible for the psychoactive effects experienced after ingestion of "magic mushrooms." Psilocin exerts its effects primarily by acting as a partial agonist at serotonin receptors—most notably the 5-HT2A receptor—with additional activity at other serotonin receptor subtypes such as 5-HT1A and 5-HT2C. This interaction leads to altered perception, mood changes, hallucinations, synesthesia, and changes in cognition. Psilocin is used recreationally and has been investigated for potential therapeutic applications in mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety[5][6][8]. It is usually administered orally but can also be taken intravenously.
