Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Psilocybin** is a naturally occurring psychedelic tryptamine alkaloid and phosphorylated prodrug of psilocin. After administration, it is rapidly dephosphorylated to psilocin, which primarily produces psychedelic and potentially therapeutic effects through agonism of the serotonin 2A receptor. Pharmaceutical-grade natural and synthetic psilocybin products are being developed with structured psychological support for treatment-resistant depression, major depressive disorder, alcohol use disorder, adjustment disorder in palliative care, fibromyalgia, Parkinson's disease-associated depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other neuropsychiatric conditions. Psilocybin itself is a single chemical entity; proprietary products such as COMP360 and natural-extract capsules are distinct drug-product formulations of the same active ingredient.
