Overview

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic alkaloid being evaluated in a pilot clinical trial (NCT04505189) led by the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London for the treatment of treatment-resistant anorexia nervosa. The intervention, termed psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy, combines the pharmacological effects of psilocybin—a potent agonist of serotonin receptors, particularly the 5-HT2A subtype—with a structured psychological framework including preparation and integration sessions. The therapy aims to facilitate psychological shifts in self-worth and self-compassion while addressing underlying neurobiological serotonin imbalances associated with eating disorders. The psilocybin used in this university-sponsored study is supplied by Compass Pathways and administered orally in doses of up to 25 mg.
