Psilocybin + escitalopram is a combination of two pharmacological agents used in research settings to investigate their interaction and potential combined effects, particularly in the context of treating depression and other mood disorders. Psilocybin is a classic psychedelic that acts primarily as an agonist at the serotonin 2A receptor (5-HT2A), leading to altered perception, cognition, and mood. Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) commonly prescribed for major depressive disorder; it increases synaptic serotonin by inhibiting its reuptake. Studies have shown that short-term pretreatment with escitalopram does not significantly diminish the positive mood or mind-altering effects of psilocybin but can reduce adverse effects such as anxiety and cardiovascular symptoms during psilocybin administration. The combination has been found safe in healthy volunteers under controlled conditions, with no significant pharmacokinetic interactions observed between the two drugs[1][2][7]. Both agents modulate serotonergic neurotransmission but through distinct mechanisms.
