PSO17CSF is an investigational biological product consisting of autologous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) that has been processed via filtration through a PSO-17 polysulfone membrane filter. Developed by researchers at Hokkaido University with support from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), this therapeutic approach is designed to treat motor neuron diseases, including Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The filtration process aims to remove neurotoxic substances, such as misfolded protein aggregates (e.g., TDP-43) and inflammatory mediators, from the patient's CSF. The filtered fluid is then re-administered to the patient via intrathecal injection. A Phase I/II clinical trial (jRCT2011220046) is evaluating the safety and tolerability of this procedure, with MRI signal changes as a secondary endpoint.
