Drug intelligence / Profile preview
psoralen-inactivated SARS-CoV-2 vaccine (SARS-CoV-2 PsIV) is an inactivated whole-virus vaccine candidate developed by the Naval Medical Research Command (NMRC) in collaboration with Vaxine and Wake Forest University. Unlike mRNA or subunit vaccines that target only the spike protein, SARS-CoV-2 PsIV is prepared by treating the whole SARS-CoV-2 virus (specifically the nCoV/USA-WA1/2020 strain) with the psoralen derivative 4′-aminomethyl-4,5′,8-trimethylpsoralen (AMT) followed by ultraviolet-A (UV-A) irradiation. This photochemical inactivation method selectively targets viral nucleic acids while preserving the native conformation of surface antigens (including the spike, nucleocapsid, envelope, and membrane proteins). Formulated with adjuvants such as Advax-CpG, the vaccine is designed to elicit broad, multi-antigenic neutralizing antibody and T-cell responses, potentially offering robust protection against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern.
