Overview

Psyllium husks are the outer coverings of seeds from the Plantago ovata plant, primarily grown in India. They are a natural source of soluble fiber and act as a bulk-forming laxative. When ingested with water, psyllium absorbs liquid in the intestines, swells, and forms a gelatinous mass that increases stool bulk and moisture. This stimulates intestinal motility through mechanical stretching of the gut wall, making stools easier to pass and relieving constipation[1][2][4][5]. Psyllium is also partially fermentable by colonic bacteria, producing short-chain fatty acids beneficial for colon health[5]. Beyond its primary use for constipation, it can help manage diarrhea (by absorbing excess water), lower LDL cholesterol when used with a low-cholesterol diet[2][3][6], improve glycemic control in diabetes[7], relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), hemorrhoids, and may aid weight management by promoting satiety[3][6][7]. It is available over-the-counter in various formulations including powders and capsules.
