Overview
PT-2 is an investigational oral formulation of octreotide, a synthetic peptide analog of somatostatin, being developed by Imagine Pharmaceuticals. It is designed to treat carcinoid tumors and carcinoid syndrome by acting as an agonist at somatostatin receptors (SSTR), particularly SSTR2 and SSTR5. This activation inhibits the hypersecretion of various hormones, such as serotonin and growth hormone, which are responsible for the clinical symptoms of carcinoid syndrome. While octreotide is traditionally administered via subcutaneous or intramuscular injection, PT-2 utilizes a proprietary delivery platform to allow for oral bioavailability, potentially improving patient compliance and quality of life. The program is currently in preclinical development.
