PT40

PT40 is a preclinical-stage generic formulation of iron sucrose being developed by Shield Therapeutics (formerly Phosphate Therapeutics Ltd.) for the treatment of iron deficiency. Designed as an intravenous (IV) iron replacement therapy, PT40 is intended to serve as a generic alternative to established branded products like Venofer. The drug consists of a polynuclear iron (III)-hydroxide complex in sucrose. Following intravenous administration, the complex dissociates into its components; the released iron is then captured by transferrin and transported to target cells, such as erythroid precursor cells, where it is incorporated into hemoglobin to support erythropoiesis. This mechanism effectively replenishes iron stores in patients with iron deficiency, particularly those with chronic kidney disease who may not tolerate or respond to oral iron supplements.
