Overview

Pterostilbene is a naturally occurring stilbenoid and a dimethylated derivative of resveratrol, primarily found in blueberries and grapes. It functions as an agonist of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα), a nuclear receptor protein that regulates the expression of genes involved in lipid metabolism and blood pressure control. In a clinical research program led by the University of Mississippi Medical Center and supported by ChromaDex, pterostilbene (marketed as pTeroPure) was evaluated in a Phase 2/3 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial for its efficacy in managing hyperlipidemia and hypertension. The study demonstrated that pterostilbene, particularly at higher doses (250 mg/day), can significantly reduce blood pressure and impact cholesterol levels in adults with dyslipidemia. While widely available as a dietary supplement, its pharmaceutical potential for cardiovascular health continues to be explored.
