Overview

PTI-901 is a low-dose formulation of naltrexone hydrochloride, a small molecule opioid antagonist, developed by Pain Therapeutics for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The drug's mechanism of action involves the selective blockade of excitatory opioid receptors at very low doses, which is intended to alleviate pain and improve overall bowel function without triggering the inhibitory effects typically associated with higher doses of opioid antagonists. Despite showing efficacy in a pilot study, PTI-901 failed to achieve its primary endpoint in a Phase III clinical trial, leading Pain Therapeutics to discontinue its development in December 2005.
