Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pueraria root, also known as Gegen or Kudzu root, is a traditional East Asian botanical medicine derived from the root of *Pueraria lobata* (or *Pueraria thomsonii*). It is rich in bioactive isoflavones, most notably puerarin, daidzin, daidzein, and formononetin. Pueraria root is widely utilized as a dietary supplement and herbal remedy, primarily for the reduction of alcohol consumption in individuals with alcohol use disorder, as well as for the alleviation of menopausal symptoms (such as hot flashes and bone loss) and cardiovascular support. Its therapeutic effects are mediated through multiple mechanisms, including the potent inhibition of mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) by daidzin and puerarin—which deters alcohol intake by causing acetaldehyde accumulation—and the modulation of estrogen receptors (ERα and ERβ) by its phytoestrogenic components.
