Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pueraria thomsonii granules are a botanical extract derived from the dried roots of Pueraria thomsonii Benth., a plant used in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Developed and studied by researchers at the Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the granules were evaluated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial for the treatment of mild dyslipidemia. The preparation contains bioactive flavonoids, such as puerarin, and polysaccharides. In the study, patients received 15 g/day of the herbal preparation for 12 weeks. While the related species Pueraria lobata showed some efficacy in increasing HDL cholesterol, Pueraria thomsonii did not demonstrate significant improvements in lipid parameters compared to placebo, though it was confirmed to be safe and tolerable. The lack of efficacy in PTR compared to PLR is attributed to its lower total flavonoid content.
