Overview

Puerariae lobatae radix is the dried root of Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi, commonly known as kudzu root or 葛根 in Chinese. It is a traditional Chinese medicine used for centuries to treat conditions such as fever, headache, neck stiffness, thirst (including diabetes-related), diarrhea, limb weakness after stroke, chest pain, and alcoholism[1][2][3]. The main active components are flavonoids—especially puerarin—as well as triterpenoids, coumarins, saponins, alkaloids and polysaccharides[4][5][7][8]. Modern pharmacological studies show that it has antipyretic (fever-reducing), anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects; it can expand blood vessels in the heart and brain; lower blood pressure; relax muscles; regulate immune function and blood sugar levels; exhibit estrogen-like activity; provide neuroprotection; prevent osteoporosis; and may have anti-tumor properties[1][3]. Its primary mechanism involves cardiovascular regulation (vasodilation), neuroprotection via antioxidant pathways and modulation of glucose metabolism. It is most often administered orally in forms such as decoctions/soups/granules/capsules/oral liquids[3].
