Pulairmax (budesonide)

Pulairmax is a dry powder inhaler (DPI) formulation of budesonide, a potent synthetic glucocorticoid used for the maintenance treatment of asthma. Budesonide exerts its therapeutic effect by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, which modulates gene expression to reduce the recruitment and activation of inflammatory cells such as mast cells, eosinophils, and lymphocytes. This action decreases airway hyperresponsiveness and prevents the release of inflammatory mediators. Pulairmax was notably evaluated in a Phase 4 clinical trial conducted by the Children's Clinic Randers in Denmark, which investigated the long-term effects of inhaled corticosteroids on growth in children compared to leukotriene receptor antagonists like montelukast. The Pulairmax device is based on the Pulvinal technology developed by Chiesi.
