Overview

Puliangao is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) topical ointment primarily used for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions, including acute and subacute eczema, dermatitis, and superficial burns. The formulation is based on the TCM principles of clearing heat, drying dampness, and detoxifying. Its core therapeutic activity is derived from its primary herbal constituents: *Coptis chinensis* (Huanglian) and *Phellodendron amurense* (Huangbai). These herbs are rich in protoberberine alkaloids, most notably berberine, which possess significant anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties. Puliangao is widely recognized as a signature hospital-made preparation (hospital internal formulation) developed and utilized by the Beijing Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is clinically applied to reduce redness, swelling, and exudation in patients with skin inflammation.
