Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Punica granatum peel extract is a botanical extract derived from the outer skin of the pomegranate fruit. It is rich in bioactive polyphenols, particularly the ellagitannin punicalagin, as well as flavonoids and tannins. In clinical settings, specifically for oral health, it has been evaluated as a 5% solution delivered via oral irrigation as an adjunct to scaling and root planing. The extract exerts anti-inflammatory effects by reducing levels of mediators such as interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) and exhibits antibacterial activity against oral pathogens. It also possesses antioxidant and astringent properties, making it a candidate for treating chronic gingivitis and improving periodontal health.
