Overview

Punicafolin is a hydrolyzable tannin, specifically an ellagitannin, naturally occurring in plants such as *Punica granatum* (pomegranate) and *Acer pseudosieboldianum* (Pax) Komarov. It is characterized by its potent anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-proliferative properties. Research indicates that punicafolin exhibits significant chemopreventive activity against prostate cancer by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting cell proliferation. While it belongs to a class of compounds known to modulate DNA methylation through the inhibition of DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs), its specific potency in this regard is often compared to related ellagitannins like geraniin or granatin B. It is primarily studied as a bioactive constituent of medicinal plant extracts for its potential in cancer prevention and treatment.
