Overview

Pure water refers to highly purified H₂O that is free from significant levels of impurities such as dissolved minerals, organic compounds, particulates, and microorganisms. In the pharmaceutical industry and laboratory settings, "pure water" is produced through processes like reverse osmosis (RO), deionization (DI), distillation, or a combination of these methods to meet stringent quality standards. It serves as an excipient in drug formulations (especially non-parenteral products), for reconstitution of powders and solutions, cleaning equipment and containers, synthesis of active ingredients or intermediates, and analytical testing[1][4][7]. Pure water does not have a pharmacological mechanism of action; its role is functional—as a solvent or vehicle—rather than therapeutic. The purity level required depends on the application; for example: - Purified Water (PW): Used in oral/topical drugs. - Water for Injection (WFI): Used in parenteral/sterile preparations. Pharmaceutical-grade pure waters are regulated by pharmacopeial standards such as USP or EP[2][8]. They must meet strict limits on microbial content (<100 CFU/mL for PW) and chemical contaminants.
