In the pharmaceutical industry and laboratory settings, "pure water" is produced through processes like reverse osmosis (RO), deionization (DI), distillation, or a combination of these methods to meet stringent quality standards. It serves as an excipient in drug formulations (especially non-parenteral products), for reconstitution of powders and solutions, cleaning equipment and containers, synthesis of active ingredients or intermediates, and analytical testing[1][4][7]. Pure water does not have a pharmacological mechanism of action; its role is functional—as a solvent or vehicle—rather than therapeutic. The purity level required depends on the application; for example: - Purified Water (PW): Used in oral/topical drugs. - Water for Injection (WFI): Used in parenteral/sterile preparations. Pharmaceutical-grade pure waters are regulated by pharmacopeial standards such as USP or EP[2][8]. They must meet strict limits on microbial content (<100 CFU/mL for PW) and chemical contaminants.
