Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a **combination therapy** used for post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) against rabies in humans. It consists of: - **Purified chick embryo cell rabies vaccine (PCECV)**: an inactivated vaccine produced by propagating rabies virus in chick embryo fibroblast cells, then inactivating the virus with β-propiolactone. Administered to generate active immunity by inducing anti-rabies neutralizing antibodies in the recipient[1][3][7]. - **Human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG)**: derived from pooled human plasma from vaccinated donors, providing immediate, passive anti-rabies antibodies at the exposure site and systemically. HRIG neutralizes the virus until the body produces effective antibodies in response to the vaccine[2][6][7]. Together, these agents are standard of care for PEP after potential rabies exposure (especially **category III exposures** such as bites or scratches that break the skin)[2][6][7]. The recombinant vaccine component is given intramuscularly, while HRIG is administered by infiltration around the wound and any remainder intramuscularly at a distant site. This combination is not for prior immunization but for emergency PEP.
