Overview

Purified chicken-embryo cell rabies vaccine (PCEC or PCECV) is an inactivated viral vaccine developed for the prevention of rabies in humans. The vaccine is produced by propagating an attenuated rabies virus strain (such as Flury LEP or Pitman-Moore) in primary chick embryo cell cultures. After virus propagation, the virus is inactivated using β-propiolactone, concentrated, purified, and lyophilized. It is administered intramuscularly or intradermally for both pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis. The vaccine induces high titers of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies, conferring protective immunity against rabies virus infection. Several brands exist worldwide, using similar production methods but differing in strain and formulation. PCECV is recommended by the World Health Organization as a modern rabies vaccine, with proven safety and efficacy in multiple clinical studies[1][3][4][5][6].
